Steven is part of the 'Outsiders ' school of art, originating in France in the 19th century. Also known as the Naïve movement, It was comprised by people with no art training at all , who suddenly started to paint. Many of them from very challenging backgrounds, suddenly started painted. All they had was talent that never before tapped. In no time this movement became a major art phenomenon and spread all over the world. Steven is probably the most important representative of this movement in the US. One of the main artists in this movement was Henri Rousseau, also known as Le Douanier. He worked and lived in the 19th century France. Steven's works are in many collections and museums in the U.S.
